MEET CAPTAIN LEIST

Captain Leist brings more than 20 years of public service experience to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.  A graduate of Oak Harbor High School, Leist first answered the call to public service in 2002 when he served as a volunteer firefighter with the Rocky Ridge Fire department.  He completed the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy at Owens Community College in 2007 where he graduated with honors and maintained a perfect attendance record.

Aaron began his career in law enforcement with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft and has also worked with the Wood County Park District, Lake Township (Wood County) Police Department, and several other local agencies before joining the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

In 2018, Aaron returned to Ottawa County to finish his career and raise his family.  Aaron was hired by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office as a Detective in December of 2018 and was promoted to Captain of Operations in October of 2021.  Aaron had always had a desire to take training classes to improve his skills and better serve the community, and in 2019 he received his Master Investigator Certification from the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy.  This certificate requires approximately 180 hours of training in a wide variety of investigative coursework.  Aaron has over 300 hours of training in multiple areas of investigations and other public services areas.

Aaron and his wife have three children that live in Ottawa County. In his free time, Aaron enjoys spending time with his family and friends, including watching his children compete in sports and coaching some of their teams.  Aaron has a passion for the outdoors and enjoys going to the Ottawa National Wildlife refuge and the many amazing State and Local parks in Ottawa County.
