As Sheriff of Ottawa County, I am proud to welcome you to the Website of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. This website should serve as a tool which allows you to meet the members of our office, as well as understand the services we provide. Also, this website allows us to better interact with the public whom we serve.

The Sheriff is the only elected law enforcement official in the State of Ohio, making the office of the Sheriff unique among law enforcement organizations. The Sheriff is elected/re-elected every four years. This allows the Sheriff, his record, and the way in which he operates his Office to be accountable to the citizens and the voters of the county in which he serves. It is the only remaining law enforcement position in the United States that is filled through the electoral process.

As outlined in Section 311.07 of the Ohio Revised Code, the Sheriff must provide the following services: Law Enforcement, Court Security, Service of Papers, Jail Operations, Extradition Process and Transportation of Prisoners. Further, the Sheriff has full police jurisdiction in all the municipalities, villages and townships within Ottawa County.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office currently employs 77 full time employees and 8 part time. There are currently 16 patrol deputies on the mainland and 4 patrol deputies assigned to Put In Bay Township (with 3 positions still to be filled in Put In Bay Township). We have 2 school resource deputies, 28 corrections deputies, 11 communications deputies, 2 civil deputies, 2 dog wardens, 1 mental health professional in our corrections staff, and 4 detectives. We also have 7 administrative staff. Our part time employees provide security services within the courthouse of Ottawa County and one works within our finance division.

I am blessed to work alongside the men and women that make up the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. They are a group of law enforcement professionals that I would put up against any law enforcement agency in our region. The pride that our deputies have in their community is evident in the way that they perform their duties.

My wife, Lori, and I live in Catawba Island Township. Our oldest son, his wife, and our grandson live in Bay Township. Our youngest son is a student at Bowling Green State University, where he is also the National Collegiate Bodybuilding Champion.

Lori and I love our community and with her past history of Ottawa County law enforcement service, we both understand the importance of service over self. As I have said since the day I took office, I will never take one day for granted in this position. I promise that every decision made by myself or my administrative staff will be made with the right intension. We will always try to do what is best for Ottawa County.

I invite you to enjoy our website and utilize the tools provided. If we can ever be of assistance or better serve our community, I welcome input that would assist us.

Sincerely,

Sheriff Stephen J. Levorchick
