The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated in providing our staff with the training to better resolve critical situations. In collaboration with community resources, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to training all employees with all the necessary tools in assisting subjects in a crisis situation. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training improves our staff’s communication with a subject in crisis.
The goal of CIT training is to promote safety. This is done by educating law enforcement on mental illness and by having officers learn about the characteristics associated with untreated mental illness. Officers practice skills designed to de-escalate certain behaviors. This allows for an increase in safety for both the officer and the subject in crisis.
CIT training allows deputies and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office as a whole to increase on-scene expertise and strive for a positive resolution to the crisis situation. Arrest rates are decreased and subjects in crisis are directed to resources that allow them to receive the proper help.
